This Was England

'This Was England' is an artist book based on the 2004 film ‘This Is England’ by Shane Meadows, and was a project in response to a brief set by the design studio Julia. The book itself is a typographic piece, drawing comparisons between key quotes from the film, and relevant facts from the time. The dust jacket features movie stills, and on the inside images from the 1980’s. The aim was to emphasise how much England as a nation has moved forward over the subsequent three decades, tackling diversification, racism, immigration, and employment with a backdrop of economic turmoil and political change.
